The dreaded cluster flies have arrived!!!
Now that the temperatures are starting to drop, these nuisance pests are looking for warm dry places to hibernate and shelter from the cold . They will usually collect in large numbers, in the roof space of your home, but they will hide under any object that affords shelter - between the carpet and skirting boards and in the gaps between windows and frames. They also love to use garages, wool sheds, tool sheds, hay barns and stables as a wintering-over space.
These pests emit a pheromone (even when dead), that attracts others cluster flies to the nice cosy spot they've found. As more flies join the cluster the pheromone strength builds until all the flies in the area are clustered together in the same roof void, or other place in homes and farm buildings. A home can be infested with thousands of these slow moving smelly flies.
Cluster flies have abdomens full of fat globules, so it's not a good idea to swat them. This is possibly the remnants of the larval fat and may provide food for the flies during their winter hibernation. So instead we suggest our full cluster fly treatment, which consists of blowing a dust through out your roof space, as well as our interior and exterior spider and fly spray.
There are no products on the market that completely eradicate these flies, but our treatment definitely helps to reduce the numbers significantly.
Even though there is a certain yuck factor to them, cluster flies are not a food pest and won't lay eggs on your food. They are however a considerable nuisance, plus, in large numbers the rancid fat like smell they produce can be another unpleasant side effect for those whose homes are infested.
